Belarusian authorities plan to use pro-government associations during 2015 presidential campaign

During his visit to Minsk Tractor Works, President Alexander Lukashenko said that there was civil society in Belarus – trade unions, youth, women’s and veterans’ organizations. Amid falling ratings of government institutions the Belarusian government hopes to bolster activities of pro-government organisations (quangos) in the presidential campaign. In addition, the authorities might exploit the potential of public associations to impose their agenda in relations with Western capitals.
