A friend of Belarus in Focus Pavel Sheremet murdered in Kyiv
A prominent Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed early on July 20 when the car he was driving exploded in Kyiv, Ukraine. Pavel was a long-time partner of Belarus in Focus Information Office and two-time member of Belarus in Focus international journalism competition.
Belarus in Focus Information Office deeply regrets the tragic death of Pavel and hopes that those who committed this crime will be punished.
Pavel Sheremet was a founder of Belarus Partisan online newspaper. He also was a chief editor of Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta and a main correspondent of Russian ORT public TV channel in Belarus.
He was detained in 1997 for covering the situation on Belarusian-Lithuanian border by the Belarusian border patrol. Sheremet was charged with illegal border crossing, "exceeding their professional rights as journalists", and participating in a conspiracy. Sheremet and his cameraman Zavadsky were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and 18 months’ imprisonment, respectively, but given suspended sentences and a "nominal" fine of $15 USD.
During the last five years Sheremet lived in Kyiv. He was a host of the Ukrainian Radio Vesti morning show. He also wrote for Ukrainskaya Pravda.
