The number of the political prisoners in Belarus: are new criteria needed?

December 09, 2021 18:38

December 17th, 5 PM (UTC +3)

Pre-registration is required for access, details are below.

More than 900 people in Belarus are considered political prisoners according to the joint statements by Viasna Human Rights Center and other human rights organizations. At the same time, some initiatives which help the political prisoners consider it necessary to recognize a wider circle of detainees as political prisoners because of the situation with the repressions in Belarus.

Today’s open questions include:

● What are the methodology and the procedures that are currently used by the human rights community in Belarus to recognize people as political prisoners? What is the history of their development?

● What are the advantages and threats associated with the expansion of the criteria for recognition of the political prisoners?

● Can the principle of the presumption of innocence be used when recognizing political prisoners?

  • Viachaslau Kasinerau, founder of Dissidentby, an initiative to support the political prisoners
